A September 30, 1903 afternoon panoramic view, shot by H.J Miles, of people at the north end of Ocean Beach located near the Cliff House on San Francisco's western shore. The film is a production of the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company. If some of these scenes look familiar, it is because this is the full video from which 2 short clips, "Cliff House from Ocean Beach" and "Crowds at Ocean Beach," housed at archive.org, were taken.

Subject: Interesting history
The geography hasn't changed much, tho most of the buildings in the background are no longer there. Today's Cliff House is a mere shadow of its former self. I found the mob scene interesting; apparently the beach attracted bigger crowds than it does now, despite transportation being more difficult in 1903. Notice the men are all dressed in suits, vests and ties, while the ladies have tons of clothes. Even the few bathers, all children, are mostly dressed. Watch the guy who follows the camera around: everybody wants to be on TV. Five stars for historical interest.

Subject: Very interesting
If you'd like to see what this area looks like nowadays, see it on google maps. Near as I can figure its on the beach at the end of Balboa St. You can determine this by the background hill. The camera is at about where the hill begins to rise in the background which is at Balboa street.

Go to maps.google.com and go to Cliff House San Francisco. Then do a street view at about the end of Balboa St. Notice the distance to the cliff house and the Dutch Windmill (which you cant see from street view so you have to do aerial view).

Then watch the film and notice the distance to the cliff house and also you'll see the windmill spinning in the background.

Cool!
